Juggling Work and Toddler Time: 3 Tips for Flexible Scheduling

Being a work-at-home mom comes with its own set of challenges, especially when it comes to balancing your professional responsibilities with the needs of your little one. As a self-employed mom, I’ve come to appreciate the flexibility of my schedule while also recognizing the importance of carving out dedicated time for my toddler. Here are my top three tips for scheduling daily activities for your toddler when you have work to do:

  1. Make the Most of Flexible Time Slots: One of the perks of being self-employed is having the flexibility to manage your own time. I’ve found that carving out specific time slots for toddler activities, especially during the window after naptime and before dinner, can make a world of difference. For me, this typically falls between 3-5ish in the afternoon. By planning my work tasks around this time frame, I can ensure that both my work and my toddler’s needs are met.
  2. Embrace the Power of Preparation: It’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking that getting out of the house with a toddler is a daunting task. However, I’ve learned that a little preparation goes a long way. By keeping a diaper bag packed and ready to go, and ensuring that essentials like the stroller are easily accessible, I can streamline the process of heading out for activities. Sometimes, pushing through the initial resistance and just getting out there leads to rewarding experiences for both me and my little one.
  3. Think Small, Act Big: Activities don’t have to be elaborate to be enjoyable for toddlers. Even simple errands like a trip to the grocery store or Target can be exciting adventures for young children. When I’m looking for slightly more involved activities, we love visiting our local Science Center or spending time at the park. It’s important to remember that what may seem mundane to us can be incredibly stimulating for our little ones. Keeping an open mind and embracing the joy of discovery can turn even the simplest outings into memorable experiences.

While juggling work and toddler time as a work-at-home mom may have its challenges, it’s entirely possible to find a balance that works for both you and your little one. By making the most of flexible time slots, embracing preparation, and thinking creatively about activities, you can create meaningful moments with your toddler while still fulfilling your professional responsibilities. So go ahead, seize the day, and make those precious memories together!
